Argentina ranks second worldwide in recent protectionist measures likely to
affect foreign trade, according to a Latinvex analysis of Global Trade Alert data
from the UK-based Center for Economic Policy Research. Only Russia has
implemented more measures.
Argentina has
implemented 237 protectionist measures. That compares with 155 in Brazil, the
second-worst country in Latin America and sixth-worst worldwide.
Interestingly enough,
Brazil has implemented fewer recent protectionist measures than the United
States (164) and the United Kingdom (156), the data shows.
On average Latin America
implemented 48 protectionist measures.
Honduras, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic were the countries that
implemented the fewest protectionist measures. Combined they implemented 11
measures, or 21 times less than Argentina. Among Latin America's top seven economies, Chile and Peru are the least protectionist, according to the Latinvex analysis.
